Okay, first of all just let me apologize if this is the wrong forum to ask this in. But I'm going to ask it here, since it pertains to my new G10.
Anyway, here's the problem. I already have two 40Ds, and I use EOS Utility to transfer images from camera, and I use Digital Photo Professional to edit images. So I just got some shots with my new Powershot G10, connected the USB port, and I tried to upload images to my PC using EOS Utility. And EOS Utility wouldn't work with my G10. I managed to save the files to my PC manually (albeit without being able to see the image thumbnails which show which images I'm selecting). I then tried opening that image in Digital Photo Professional, and DPP was unable to open the images. So basically, my G10 doesn't work with the versions of EOS Utility that came with my 40D. An obvious solution would then seem to be to use the versions of EOS Utility and DPP that came with my G10. My question is, if I uninstall the 40D's versions of EOS Utility and DPP, will the G10's bundled software work with my 40Ds? I realize that Canon tech support can probably give me a better answer, but they're closed until Monday. So I was hoping that someone here knows what to do. |

Did you run the install CD that came with the G10? I think that will overwrite what's on your hard drive now and you won't have to do anything else.

So...how should I do this? Currently, my Canon Utility software is all located on a different drive (like, F or G or something). Meanwhile, when I pop in the G10's software disc, it wants to try to save the software to the standard C drive. Should I leave C as the default, or should I try to change the destination location in order to try to get it to overwrite my currently installed software? |

Anyway, I don't know jack about $#*+, but my initial hypothesis was that the 40D's bundled software wouldn't work with the G10 because the G10 is a newer camera. Of course the software wouldn't directly support the G10, because the G10 didn't even exist when the 40D was released. I would assume that the software with Canon's newer cameras would support their older cameras. But I'm not sure about that either. Because while the G10 did come with DPP 3.5 (40D came with DPP 3.4), the G10 comes with EOS Utility 1.1a (much older 40D comes with EOS Utility 2.4).

I don't think I know any more than you do, lol, but I've installed four different versions of Canon's camera software on my computer for four different cameras. Are they side-by-side or one on top of another? Do I have multiple versions of the same software? Dunno. I can only tell you that each camera picks out what it needs and uses it.
Can't help you with the question about which drive to install it on - I'm a Mac, not a PC

Just as a follow up I also had the 40D software and the G10 raw can't be read. I installed the software for the G10 and it did a nice upgrade of the 40D DPP software to 3.5 and didn't leave any extra versions on my Vista machine.

Canon really needs to update their site. Last I checked, version 3.4 of DPP is only available and not the updated 3.5, which is on the G10 CD and allows you to read G10 RAWs.

Lizard,
Install the new Canon software on the same drive as where the older versions reside. The new software will overwrite the old. When that is finished your new G10 and the older equipment will all work just fine. Mark |
