Sharpening the images in photoshop makes a huge difference, but you need to be careful when sharpening pictures of women. Sometimes, the process can add blemishes to their skin like it did in the top picture.
I would recommend that you find a good photoshop book to have as a reference. This ONE, found on Amazon, is what I use as a reference and I have found it to be very helpful.
