Inspired by the user name of a rather lovely young member of POTN, and a brief chat with another member who "always makes great" comments, I thought I'd try out a new idea for a thread:

Post your images of cemeteries, graveyards, sarcophagi, tombs, chapel's of rest, etc.

Please note:
The idea is NOT to be morbid or macabre, but instead to celebrate the joy that we're all still above the ground and able to enjoy life...and take pictures!

[If you've had a loved one recently die, I apologise in advance for seeming to stamp on your emotions, but that's not my intention - instead, please see how remembering the good times is what they would have wanted...and take some pictures to prove you're still with us, in the land of the living]

So, here's a couple from my bike ride today:
Taken from a cemetary above the city of Kagoshima, Kyushu, Japan. I've another shot that shows the views, so might add that later...

Hey there!

Thanks for getting into the "spirit" of it :lol::lol:

Very catching images you've added. I really like the first one, and being out of the UK for 5 years now, it's "odd" to me to see angels in a cemetetary. As you can tell, Japanese ones are very "Shinto".

What a pretty and happy expression she has.
That alone is interesting and intriguing.

Great shot though Jay. Like the "ethereal" edge around the angel. Was that deliberate or just lucky?

I didn't apply any filters but it was a brilliantly sunny day so shooting wide open may have caused a little natural glow.

Chalk it up to luck I guess. ;)

Ooooo....lucky you!

If you've got any more, post 'em up.
:D

I plan on tring out some older cemeteries near my schools this week, as the one above is quite new. Odd thing is, even the markers which have a "date of death" hundreds of years ago, look new. I guess it's a "Japanese" thing to keep renewing the stone.......???

Well, I suppose that's possible.

However, I would think that there are places in Japan where not much is older than 1945. I think you'll find the same is true with parts of Berlin.

Very true. Along with parts of pretty-much most of Europe!

But, (a tad off-thread) the Japanese have just begun a movement to retain historical parts of the country other than the usual shrines and temples in Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, etc.

And their ideas about houses beggars-belief! But maybe that's for another time....

I love this thread idea.
I have always loved cemeteries - so peaceful, quiet, still.
Anyway I don't post a lot on here, and haven't really shared many photos, but I had a lovely evening catching the sunset at our local cemetery here in town. I have a ton of photos that I like, but I'll just post a couple for now. I'm no professional, and am just starting to get a bit more serious about my photography hobby. But here you have it:

Found this beautiful monument and story at Woodlawn in the Bronx, NY (thanks to geocaching.com for leading me there). Shots taken with a P&S but I can't get over the power of the monument.

Hey there BuddhaMama!
Cool user-name...and thanks for posting. That first shot looks like some poor dude is actually being crucified! His name's not Brian, is it?

Do add more pics as and when....
