Lens Align Pro - Just Arrived -- WOW!

I just got my Lens Align Pro today, and decided to give it a whirl. I am BLOWN AWAY! This thing really rocks. It took me probably about 10-15 minutes to get set up, but once I did, the process is EASY! I checked my 100mm f/2.8 lens, and it was out. I dialed it in, and it looks 1000% better.

I want to point out one thing that is important - my 50D has the IR blocking filter removed, and at this time I am still waiting on my color correction filter (external IR blocking filter)... SO, this means that when I was testing focus using camera's internal focus it was probably thrown off by the IR wavelengths. I am not 100% certain of this, but it might explain why the lens was so far out. Either that, or I got another stellar copy of a Canon lens (which is getting old).

So... on to the good stuff!

Here is the test shot I took with Live View. Since Live View focuses using the data off of the sensor chip, it's going to be spot on.
100% Crop -> http://www.jim-kramer.com ...focus/live-view-100mm.jpgexternal link
Magnified 2x (in PS) -> http://www.jim-kramer.com ...us/live-view-100mm_x2.jpgexternal link

(note, the images are inverted, and in B&W to make it easier to read)

Here is the first shot I took using the cameras focusing:
100% Crop -> http://www.jim-kramer.com ...us/lens-focus-100mm+0.jpgexternal link
Magnified 2x (in PS) -> http://www.jim-kramer.com ...lens-focus-100mm+0_x2.jpgexternal link

you can see right away how far off the focus is... sad... but interesting.

Here is the final shot after adjustment (+20 Back - this is as far as it will go!)
100% Crop -> http://www.jim-kramer.com ...s/lens-focus-100mm+20.jpgexternal link
Magnified 2x (in PS) -> http://www.jim-kramer.com ...ens-focus-100mm+20_x2.jpgexternal link

MUCH BETTER!!!! If I had to guess, I'd say the lens was front focusing by about 8" @ 15'. That's pathetic.

I can't wait to calibrate my other lenses. I am going to wait until the CC filter gets here, and then check them all. As much as I'd love to be affiliated with the folks at Lens Align, I am not... I'm just passing along some info on an amazing tool! It's a little expensive, but if you already sunk some serious cash in your glass, you might as well utilize it to it's fullest potential! I'll post more results for my other lenses when I get them done. Only bad thing is that now I know just how far off they are going to be on my 1D Mk II body. I sure hope they come out with a Mk IV soon, and include this amazing ability (micro focus adjustment).

One last shot...

This is a handheld shot of my laptop keyboard at f/2.8 focused on the front edge of the 'H' key. It looks awesome!

Peace!

I was looking at that as well, but I don't really want to spend almost $200.00 with shipping. Looks good and it helped a lot. I'm not sure if my lenses are that much off to justify the price for these.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

it's worth every penny... in my opinion. I'll have a better idea of how many of my lenses are off when I get the chance to check them all... but just knowing they are the best they can be is worth the money. It isn't $200 either. I searched and found a 10% off coupon code, and got i for $161.

Would you think the "Pro" is needed, or the standard would work just as well. Or, put another way, does it seem as though the pro does a better job, or just faster and/or easier?

the setup of the basic model is more difficult. Something to do with the sighting setup, and how it works. I'm sure the folks at Lens Align would be more than happy to explain the differences in detail.

+1 on the Lens Align Pro

The major differences compared to the "home brew" targets on the net are:
1) The ease of getting the target and the camera "squared up" (always a hard task with the improvised targets on the net).
2) The repeatability of the results using the LAP (I tried, and have commented on this Forum on several of these other systems).

I used mine to "dial in" 7 lenses on my 50D, and check the same lens on my 40D. The results of the latter tests encouraged me to send it to Canon for a calibration. When it came back, LAP certainly showed an improvement!

I think it is a great product!

I just did a google search, and found it. The first one I found was expired, and the 2nd one worked great. I do not remember the code - I didn't write it down. It doesn't show on my receipt either... it just shows:

wow! so you own a hardware store then?

even then it wouldn't be free! But maybe he's not in England, so it's zero pounds but ~10 EUR or USD? :lol:

seriously though, had you guys used something before this? What were your adjustments for your old method -vs- lens align pro (took me a minute to figure out LAP = that BTW...)? I won't argue it's not a hell of a system, and I've been tempted myself, I just find it hard to spend the money on something that will only get used at home once or twice. I've been using an on screen (monitor) test pattern with good results, or so I think, so I'm just curious what adjustments you had dialed in BEFORE you used LAP and then what you landed on AFTER.

Thanks!

This only works for folks with the micro adjustment capability right? otherwise you just know the lens is off and have to send it in to be fixed.
