New Zealand Motocross shots

Hi there, I've recently started working for New Zealands Bike Mart magazine covering motocross events in our South Island and thought I'd post a couple of shots for your comments. 1st up I have to apologise for the equipment Im using but, that notwithstanding, I was able to capture better images than that of two local pro photographers using high-end gear! Any opinions on whether a EOS 20D is much better than a D70 for this kind of stuff?? I need to upgrade yesterday..

Wow, great shots! Especially considering you captured them with a point and shoot camera. I can't wait to see what you'll capture with a DSLR with better lenses and better shutter response.

here's a couple more. For any MX enthusists, the Suzuki rider (number 17 or 3) is Scott Columb of Queenstown, NZ and will be contesting the British Motocross championships and Supercross series under the wing of good friend and world MX1 number 2, Josh Coppins.

MX_Ant those are very cool shots!
Most of photography has to do with the user, the gear only comes second.
There are some very accomplished and respected members here useing nothing more than a Canon A series, or G series.

You clearly have a good understanding of the sport, and know how to stretch your camera to its limits.

nice shots mx_ant . i am a mx fan so i will be interested in seeing how your home boy does this year . one of our fastest up and comers , 17 year old colton facciotti was going to be racing the sheffield sx round again this year but he just got banged up at a canadian ax round this weekend so we are not sure if he will be able to make it . come on over to www.mxforum.com and www.mxnorth.ca and post some of your pics . the boys are always interested in seeing pics , especially international ones , and there are quite a few pro mx shooters that post there as well . tell em eddie sent ya !

Great shots! You'll be amazed at how much easier better it is using a DSLR. I shoot mainly motocross as recreation, and recently purched a D70 but was dissapointed with the noise at high ISO at even 800 and the seemingly slow burst speed at < 3fps. So I returned it and got the 20d and have not had one regret. Lightning fast response time and even fairly usable shots at iso 3200. The 5 fps for some reason seems way faster. For motorsports photography, the 20d is the only way to go in my opinion. Here is a couple of shots I took while at the AMA Motocross in Washougal Washington this summer. Keep up the good work.

Moppie, I agree completely - great equipment will never make up for a basic lack of talent/experience! That said, I've definately come to the limit of my lil digital snapper!

Gaza, you were at the 3rd round of the Nationals last weekend right? My pics are from the South Island Championships held 20 minutes south of Dunedin on the 8th and 9th Oct nevermind! Nice crisp images in your latest post btw.

Thought I might put up the pic that changed my photographic life forever and convinced me to hang up the old Nikon film camera for digital! This is a pic I took of Josh Coppins whipping it against the beautiful Central Otago hills surrounding the Queenstown Moto Park. My bike had broken down while we were doing laps and so I grabbed my mates 3.2MP.. (man I wish it had been a 20D!)

Hey great shots! Cannot discount the 6490s... I have one that I used up till a couple months ago and it works wonders for what it does... you are going to be smoking with the 20D

I use Canon 1DS mark 2 cameras, and usually a 300mm f2.8 Canon lens. It
is expensive...
I would recommend the Canon 20d and a 70-200 f2.8 Canon lens. This is a
great set-up.
