A few weeks ago I got a Seagate 500GB Free agent for $92, so far I really like it. Use Snyctoy to back-up, and I don't have to worry about it.

Reviving an old thread from the dead--it is funny to see how quickly technology gets cheaper :) I'm actually going to get 2 external drives today and I think I can get 2 1TB drives for around $250 total...

It's important to remember with Hard Drives that it is not a question of IF but WHEN they will fail. There are moving parts in these drives, and they are the most failure prone part of any computer except for a tape drive. 8 years in the technology business taught me that :)

The funny thing is there are still 2.1 and 4.2GB 5400RPM SCSI drives from the early 90s [that are the size of half a laptop these days] that are still humming along...

I have had WD My Book ( my son took it and has massive amounts of music and picture files) with no problems. I and my other son have WD Passport, whatever the 500G is, maybe Elite???, also best friend has 3 WD 350 to 500. None of us has ever had problems.

I have two WD MyBook external HDs. The 250gb one I've had for three years. The 1TB one I've had for a little over a year. No problems what so ever. :)

Drives are really getting cheaper everyday.

I've had my Western Digital 250GB mini external HD for over 2 yrs and never had a problem...Thinking of buying another one, likely a 500GB. I bought my first one from Costco and will be doing the same with the second :)

i would have just save some money for a drobo and then get 2 1TB internal drives for about 160 total. altho if ur TB drives needs to be somewhat portable then drobo is out of the question. that thing is little big for that.

do you think that would be the main cause WHEN/IF they fail. I was wondering what if you didn't use the drive, but filled it for archive purposes, then stored it.

would the life be much longer?

I've had really bad luck with western digital mybook externals. Specifically, the enclosures themselves. I've had 3 sh*t the bed in the past year....all the enclosure's fault. The drives themselves are Caviar greens I believe, a very good drive. In all three cases, I did not lose data, but had to go and purchase external enclosures to access the drives.

YMMV
