Default G11 vs EOS Rebel XS

I am about to return my G11 and buy an EOS Rebel XS. Am I nuts? Which one, do you think, is actually better and why!?

That's about all I needed. Target has it on sale for $30 off, plus you get a $100 gift card - $30 less than I paid for my G11!

However, there are some shortcomings... but i'm too excited to care! I could always take it back and get the G11 again if it doesn't work out I suppose

Why are you unhappy with the G11, and what do you think the SLR will provide that the G11 doesnt.

Its easy to buy gear thinking you pics will improve, and buying a DSLR is a slippery slope of buying lenses and filters etc and can cost plenty of $$$$

So why the idea to get a DSLR?

Yeah I kind of regret buying a DSLR. I bought a 18-250 Tamron lens for it hoping it would make it a great all around camera. Sucks when my $1000 of equipment gets out shot by my sisters $400 advance point and shoot. Its lighter, takes better macro pictures, has the equivalent zoom, has IS, and its smaller. Whoops!

Want a XTi?

Funny to read this. I ended up sticking with the G11 with the "slippery slope" precisely in mind. that, and I really like the size, weight, features, and focal length of the G11 compared to the very corner-cutted XS.

G11 FTW!

just a question, why do you say the XS is corner cutted?

compared to the XSI. it is missing features that I would really like:

larger screen
more AF points
eye sensor fore view finder
faster shutter

Just seems that if I were to go the dSLR route, I would have to go XSI or better because the G11 has kindof spoiled me for a point and shoot. I would expect an SLR to be better in every functional aspect, and on par with competing SLRs from other companies. $700 is way too much for me to be spending on a camera. For what I do most of the time (macro, video, car pictures, general BS photography) I am better off with the smaller, more versatile G11.

i thought you were referring to the xs is corner cutted compared to the G11...

well different strokes for different folks i guess...

I dont miss all those "corner cutted" features tho (to upgrade to an Xsi, maybe to a 50D or a 7D but that's a different thread altogether. )

I would still recommend the XS for a beginner who wants a DSLR. Getting either the XS, XSi or the T1i for a beginner is a win win for anyone.

@ mikejet
+1 on that!

Uh, the G11 does not have any of those either

However you wanna talk yourself out of it. The only advantage to the G11 is the included lens and the slightly smaller size (which still isn't a pocket camera either).

I bought my G10 before my 50D. I had other point n shoots before. cybershots and a kodak, then I got the G10 because I wanted more. Then using the G10, I felt a lot of limitations that start to get to you after a while. So I went for the 50D. I use the G10 for backup and as an everyday camera. I use the 50D when I know I want to take pictures somewhere.

It's a big step to take though. Once you start with a DSLR glass will be the most important thing, and a flash. I'm getting a 580EX II next week and in April a 70-200mm 2.8 IS.

I have a coworker who I convinced to buy a G11 though. She has a XSi and got tired of lugging it everywhere and when she saw my G10, she got hooked.

Both have their applications and uses.

If you really want to shoot and learn then save up money, buy the XSi and a Tamron 17-50 2.8. If you want to save a bit of money then grab a used 18-55 IS kit lens(I got mine for $90) and a 50 1.8 prime. You will have tons of fun.

correct, but because it' not an SLR, I don't expect those things. the versatility of the G11 out weighs the quality of the XS in my book.

Yes. I was in the same situation recently, trying to decide if I should upgrade my point and shoot to a G11 or go DSLR. It came down to I really want both, and the practicality of the G11 spoke to me so I purchased it first.

I figured I'd buy a DSLR later and in the meantime try to maximize my skill on the G11. So here I am just a few weeks later and Amazon has the XSi with 18-55is AND 55-250 for $640 delivered. That was all it took (I'm hopeless) and I'm waiting for it now. I still have a lot to learn about photography in general, and I intend to get better results with my G11, but I've already encountered situations where I felt like I was trying to use the G11 in ways it couldn't handle. Still I woudn't be surprised if my G11 gets more use as it'll go with me all the time, and for most of my use it does a great job. The Xsi will be for when I'm going on an outing just for photos, where I can take the time to be more creative and hopefully learn something.

If I had an SLR, I would be better off with the S90 than the G11. I got the G11 because, to me, it is the perfect compromise between size, performance, features and cost. I would not want a G11 and an SLR, I would rather have a moderatly good SLR (XTI, XSI) and an S90.
