Here's a photo to show you the distortion at 24mm using FF (5D2).

Great lens. Definitely distortion at the wide end on FF though.

Here's one at 28mm on FF...

On FF, barrel is very noticeable at 24mm, overall, it is a great lens on. On crop body, distoriton is minimal, but the I think it is just a average lens for crop body.

I always see people say this kind of thing and it never makes any sense to me. I can see where you might think the focal length isn't the best when used on a crop, though it is perfect for me, but how does it suddenly become merely average just because it is being used on a sensor that gets all of the good out of the lens and minimizes the distortion on the wide end? It is still sharp, still has great color and contrast, still has a good IS system...

Turn off IS. 24-105L is one of the lens that should have IS turned off when it's on a tripod. But you can barely tell unless zoom past 100%.

It's hard to say but everything else looked in focus. I took the picture at f/22 at ISO 100 with differing exposure times between 25" to 35".

So an equivelant 35mm - 170mm lens on a crop is a bad thing?

barrel distortion is also prominent with the 24-70L on FF in some cases. it just depends on what you are shooting.

that's one reason i don't own the 24-105L actually ... of course it's more compromised on the extremes .

i'm just saying for all these guys saying they don't see distortion @ 24mm ....they must not be shooting FF.

I love & hate my 24-105L. I love the versatility of the 4x zoom range. It is a sharp lens, especially if you can stop down to 5.6. I don't like the barrel distortion on the wide end. It really is pretty bad. If you say you don't see it, try correcting it in Lightroom and you'll suddenly say "Oh, there it is".
