They need to release a cable that would allow you to connect your iPhone directly (or wireless dongle for the camera).

it should add, i am looking to change setting on the camera with out touching the camera for landscape photos. if it can do this wirelessly, that would be fantastic. if it would it with some hardwire set up that would be ok.. i just need to figure out how to do it.

I'm not going to say this is 100% certain but I don't think what you want is possible. The app linked above must have a computer tethered to the camera -- why?

Because the iPhone does not allow unfettered access to its USB port. It severely limits what developers can do over USB. What you want might be possible on a jailbroken phone but I can't say for sure and you'd need to have the app coded. The current app requires WIFI and tethering because it is actually the tethered PC controlling the camera, not the phone. The phone is just talking to the PC and telling it what to tell the camera.

Hoff,

do you think there is a way to take the apple cable from the ipod and run it to some sort of female USB that runs straight to the camera?

What? No. Just sticking a wire there doesn't mean it can talk to whatever it's connected to.

The Hoff: Actually, part of iPhone OS 3.0 was to allow developers to utilise hardware via the dock connector port. As far as I know, there's nothing stopping anyone creating software on the iPhone to talk directly to a camera via the USB.

I have this app. What you need to do is actually connect a computer running a proprietary piece of software to your camera. The computer talks to the camera, and your iPhone/iPod touch talks to the computer.

It sounds pointless, and in someways it is. After all, you could always just use EOS utility to do the same things. That said, the interface is pretty useable, and it's much more responsive than EOS utility. You can do neat things like put your camera (and computer) outside and control it using your iPod from another room. You can take self portraits and so on.

I hardly ever use it - just bought as a toy to play. Doesn't work with the 7D at the moment.

Ah OK, thanks. Back when I was looking at possible apps to work on, camera control was one of my first thoughts... but with 2.0 you had almost no access to the dock connector.

Yes, correct. It was a 'feature' of 3.0, and I was excited at the possibilities of add-ons - basically using the iPhone screen and multitouch capability could've been neat for a lot of things, but very few developers are using it.

I think on1 even proposed that they may consider an add-on in future, but they haven't been amazing with updates to the app ( I know they're busy, and they have made a couple of important updates).

I just want 7D support - that said, that's on Canon's end. They need to update the SDK for developers.

Yes, the iPhone supports USB hardware connections, in fact there are some apps that already connect to hardware - the biggest example they showed was blood pressure cuffs.

When this was announced I truly thought there would hardware everywhere that supported this, your toaster, the george foreman grill, etc... yet nothing has really materialized.

I would think it's very possible to do what this app does without being tethered to a laptop.

That said, I own this app and have used it a few times and it works great. It allows you to remotely adjust all of the camera settings, even AF. You can easily work "in the frame" so that you can easily see what exactly the picture will look like while your composing things in the shot. This is great for product photographers, portrait photographers, light painters, etc... as well as remote locations such as on basketball backboard or church pew.

It's neat app and worth the money if you're going to do any of the above. I wouldl like to see the same capability with actually plugging the phone directly into the camera though... hoping that someone gets this at some point in the future.

I like this idea. They basicaly have the WFT produceing a web page that can control the camera and shows the live view. No 3rd party software required!
