Default Canon Lens for Digital Rebel

Hello -

I was wondering, I have a Canon Digital Rebel EOS 300D and I have the lens that came with the Camera ... it's a 18-55 mm ... it does ok, I guess, but I want another lens that's sharper, closer when taking up close shots ... I'm still learning, and really I'm afraid to get something that won't be the right one...I also will be doing some portrait photography ...

I was looking at this lens ...
28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM - is this what will work for what I describe? I'm not even sure it'll work with my Rebel - I found this one on the Canon site under the portrait/closeup lens...

Any help would be great!

Thanks,
Michelle
