well my guess is the price of the mythical 70-200 2.8 IS II will be quite higher than the current version, so version I may still have a market.

I just bought the Mk I because I can't wait. When the Mk II comes out I will probably make a decision at that time. The rebate angle made sense to me. They were not going to cannibalize their own rebate program. What I've found, and it agree with many people here is that the Mk I is a fine lens. Being the person I am I will probably get the Mk II but I absolutely needed the Mk I in early January for a Japan trip so I pulled the trigger now and bought one locally. I cannot tell any sharpness difference from my f/4 IS copy.

I agree with the rebate point. Makes sense. In fact some people were saying before that it doesn't make sense to bring it out while the rebates are still going (as I remember).
So it makes perfect sense to someone out there.

LOL yeah. I'm fine. It wasn't me, I don't "drink" alcohol.
Any news on this lens or are we all walking in the dark?!

Canon rumors had it at next week for the announcement, but yesterday said it's been pushed back till January.

so will the price go down on the older version? That would be good for someone like me who can't put a lot of cash away yet.

I noticed in the 1D Mark IV instruction manual that, when you use a 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens with the 1.4x TC, you should select only the center AF point, since selecting any other point could cause errors with that lens/TC combination. This is interesting, because this lens/TC combination is on the list of lenses that can cross-type f/4 focus to all 39 cross-type AF points on the 1D Mark IV. I suspect Canon is anxious to get a new 70-200 f/2.8 IS II on the market to eliminate that problem.

I am now under the impression we won't even see a new MKII version in 2010. Nov 24th would have been a great release date just in time for Christmas sales and now it's "delayed" until Jan 2010. Oh well, maybe it'll show up one of these years.

This is hardly a xmas present for anyone but the wealthiest consumer and that consumer already has one. Personally, I don't think the season has any influence. I think the current rebates have more to do with it.
