Default New Lens - First Opinions

Just got a Tamron 28-75 F/2.8, I was hoping to get a 70-200 2.8 IS but after getting the 7D and a slew of other recent purchases for our photography my savings was a little lower than anticipated. I debated and debated as to whether or not to get this or continue saving for the 70-200. But for the price I decided I'd get this glass now and then save up for the 70-200 next.

Unfortunately it arrived after dark so I haven't got to play with it outside yet. Here is a quick shot of my wife and daughter before dinner. This was taken with a 430EX on camera. So far I am pretty pleased with the lens. I can't wait to get it outside and run it through the paces.

I had that lens before. You'll be very happy with it.

Note:

For some reason firefox is rendering weird blue lines in the blacks of this image for me... but IE and Chrome are not...

just a word of advice - buy lenses first and THEN your camera bodies. Lenses don't go down in value over the years - 7D will be $400 in 3 years. good lens you have.

Yeah, I wait a few generations before upgrading. But I am dying for a 7D.

That's why I've picked up a pair of 580EX's. I also picked up a Genesis 200 kit and have money to spare.

Still want a 7D though...but I'll wait.

Apollo, how's the sharpness on that lens when wide open? I'm considering getting the Canon 24-70mm "L" because my Sigma 24-70/2.8 is just a little soft at the 2.8 end....

Quite good. I usually shot at f2.8-4. I switched to the 17-55 because I wanted a little more on the wide end. I do miss the 50-75 range for portraits. You can search the forum for plenty examples of 28-75.
Enough for hijacking Kortag's thread. Hey Kortag, it's morning now, get up and start shooting with your new lens and and post some pics.

I totally agree with you guys on investing in glass over bodies. The reason I bought a 7D is my wife and I wanted a 2nd body so we can both shoot. Otherwise, it would have been lenses all the way. Thanks for the feedback We have some sunshine today so hopefully I can get out and play with the new gear.
