This is news? I'd be interested to see the link that you found this on or is this just a generic question. Sure lots of people do it and many have good reasons for doing it as is evidenced by some of the responses here. You can only control things that are in your control so why lose sleep over what the other guy is doing. You have to be aware of what your competition is doing but is the person giving their work away totally free really your competition.

I can understand if you're starting out, you may shoot for free.
I don't know anyone is giving out album for free. The good ones are not cheap, even without adding the design time for the layout. |

I've provided free labor rate for wounded veterans. The client paid for all other print and album expenses.

I gave away a free album last year. And was happy to do so.
It was for a United States Marine that is serving in Afganastan. It was an honor for me to do so for somone who is providing the services We need to live with freedom in this country. I would do it again in a heartbeat. |

I shot a destination wedding in Hawaii for free (cousin's wedding). My aunt paid for my airfare, hotel, food and transport. It was a nice 4 day getaway as well. I enjoyed shooting the beach ceremony for my portfolio and gave the couple a CD of their pictures and made them a DVD slideshow. No album though.

I'm in the process of turning my hobby of photography into a business.. To do so I'm shooting events for free in order to build experience and my portfolio.
However, I am not offering albums for free. This is the only way I manage to cover a little of my expenses. Without offering to do events for free, I'm not sure how I would book clients (that I don't have a relationship with) without a portfolio. Every time I shoot an event for free I tell myself there has to be a better way, but I can't figure one out.
