I haven't owned a 430 for several years now but that's how I remember them working. And sure enough I checked this site http://www.the-digital-picture.com/R...sh-Review.aspx and it claims the same thing...perhaps that was changed in the 430EX II model.

I've metered the difference with two separate light meters and they consistenly show approximately .70 more power with the 580EX II which indicates that the light output is greater and not just inflenced by the zoom setting as claimed earlier in the thread.

With regard to flash power, I've never tried to meter it myself, but I've read many who stated a ~2/3-stop difference.

Here's a link to Chuck Gardner's tutorials on Canon flashes: http://super.nova.org/DPR/#Canon
Even if you don't like the results shown, its still full of very useful information specific to Canon flashes.

In this post he makes an excellent argument for buying 580EX II flashes over 430EX II and/or ST-E2...see the section titled "A Growth Path for a Canon System" http://super.nova.org/DPR/Canon/ The info is dated but the general principles are still applicable.

Ahh, must have been a change from the 430EX to the 430EXII model then...

Also, the 580EX II is much more adjustable than the 430EX II. The 580EX II can be adjusted down to 1/128 power in 1/3 stop increments while the 430EX II is adjustable only to 1/64th power in one stop increments.
.

that's not been my experience, not saying your wrong. My comment was only relative to output.
