I think i've read through this whole thread today and after 2 paracetamol and 2 ibuprofen I am now back in the land of the living.

Some amazing information to gather so thanks to everyone who contributed.

As a relative minnow of the Alamy world (19 images) I've recently started taking my photography more seriously as a result of viewing "all Alamy" and seeing what is being searched on and the types of pictures that all being bought as a result of searches. While this is not a true reflection of sales, it does lend itself to noticing small trends.

I have a long way to go with regards to making any money, however i'm just enjoying being a part of the whole thing.

the one thing that seldom gets picked up on is the key-wording of images. You could have the best image known to man however, if you don't set up the keywords correctly it's going to be hard to search for. So I guess that's as important as the image itself.

Your welcome Paul, but please remember this is a dying avenue of opportunity. Sales are dropping every year at an alarming rate and so are the revenues. Stock photographers are seeing a dropping number of sales and the revenue for each sale is diminishing too. There are easier ways of making money and considering the time and effort that stock work requires....one has to ask....why bother anymore, the 80's are over and there are far too many free photos which have flooded the market. Over-supply and under demand.

Story of my life to be honest. I always seemed to get into something as it was dying off. Luckily I have a full time job as an IT admin, although that's not a very exciting job at times, however, the alamy thing would never be a great earner and if It got me pocket money i'd be happy.

I'm not one to sit around refreshing a page to check my CTR. I'll still advertise for jobs, and have a few milestone birthday parties to shoot this year, which is strange. Never thought of that as a viable job, but hey ho.

So if stock photography is dying, what's the word on the street with regards to the new 'in thing'?

Free photos, self satisfaction in form of social pornography by seeing thy name in the paper, a camera that will do everything without leaving the sofa. That's the future

Best not to give them ideas lol - I know what you mean.
I guess it's about giving folk something they could never do them-self.

Question from a newb:

I was reading quiet a bit on the micro vs macro discussions on the internet but still don'T quiet get it! I often don't see a real difference in pictures for both markets. So I can't decide if I should go with micro or macro... What is more suited for one over the other? What is a buyer looking for when searching for macro?
