Not resolution. I'd NEVER switch cuz of that. I was really happy with 5d2's res, never mind about 36.

I no longer have my D600 since I returned it due to dust/oil problem getting on the sensor caused by a gap around the shutter. You can read more info here http://nikonrumors.com/2012/10/23/ni...px/#more-47100

I bought a D800 instead. Unfortunately there is no other camera better for me (with an exception of a D4, but it’s too expensive since they retail at $6,000) so I have no choice but start getting more HD drives and better computer with state-of-the-art processor to keep up with those 36 megapixel files.

Really though, HDDs are cheap and if you can blow $3000 on a camera a good $800 gets you a rig capable of editing photos...

The computer upgrade can get expensive plus the larger capacity memory cards. i7 plus 16gb will speed things up. After a while, this becomes the norm for me. I have two old 8 gb cards that I use for casual shooting since they can only hold around 92 shots (RAW + jpg). For events and video, I use the 64gb cards.

I'm building my own computer to replace my AMD x6 Phenom processor and based on the parts that I want, it will cost around $1,300 from newegg.com. $800 for a desktop computer might work but it won't have the SSD and the video card that I would like.

True, and my rig was $1600, HOWEVER If you're penny pinching, you can get away with $800 by skipping some of the niceties id bet

What's the specs of your current desktop?

27" iMac, early 2011 model, 12GB of RAM and a crappy i3 processor. Yup, time for an upgrade!! I'm waiting on the new 27" to become available next month.

Get an i5 quad and overclock the crap out of it. No need for i7, the high clocks help way more than 8 threads vs 4 (unless doing video encoding). Get Dell 27" or similar if possible (one that does adobe rgb). Get an SSD. Don't worry too much about ram, 8gb is just fine for D800. Video card, don't worry tooooo much about it for photo editing, one for between 150 and 250 dollars is fine, no need to go too nuts.

A while back I got a deal on the SanDisk Extreme 4GB cards from Adorama, think it was $30 for four of them. I shoot RAW + basic, lossless compressed and get 47 shots on one of those cards. Nice for around the house and just a few shots but I wouldn't take them away from the house.

No need for Intel at all. I'm running the AMD eight core processor and there is nothing it can't handle. The new module in LR is slow no matter what computer you're running. Adobe is aware of it and there has been numerous discussions about it on their forum but as of 4.2 still no fix.

Anyone here using a 120 gb SSD? How much room do you have after it is formatted? I'm debating between a 120 and 180gb Corsair Force GT.

I have no idea. I guess the D800 has turbo.
