I took 20 lights, 10 dark frames and 10 bias frames the flat frames didn't work out. when I tried to stack the light, dark and bias I got a message that DSS could only stack 1 shot and to turn up star detection. After turning up star detection to 98% I still get the same message. here is 1 of the light shots ISO 1600 20 sec. exposure. What am I doing wrong?

Stacking is to improve your signal to noise ratio, it allows you to push your levels in post. Its not a magic way to make stars appear from nowhere....You need some longer exposures to help capture more stars. and possibly darker skys by the looks of your image?

Randy, I had the same problem. I had some help from a fellow here (Baz), and it really helped me.
I think you exposures were a good start, but you may have missed something in the DSS program. If your interested I can send you the instruction Baz sent me. Tim

Mate, don't include foreground objects. That's probably the problem.
Here's two pages that might help - How to take photographs of space ASIGN Observatory II Intro to image stacking. Baz. Last edited by A.S.I.G.N. Observatory : 22nd of June 2012 (Fri) at 23:04. |

Aside from the light pollution in this image, the portion of stacking that did work seems to have done a very good job of removing the noise from the image
