Default Friend's first attempt! C&C appreciated!

My friend asked if she could take my T3i out to the yard to get some pictures of her daughter Madison. I let her, got her on the right settings, and this is what she got! She wanted me to post them to see what others thought. This was her first time using anything more advanced than a Kodak EasyShare point-and-shoot.

These are SOOC.

I already showed her how to darken Maddy's arm in #3 since it's blown out.

they look a touch cool, and I'd dodge her face in several to make her glow (seem a tad bit underexposed). She got the focus right on and they're compositionally very good.

I agree, I have been messing around with them in PS and they are already looking even better. Still, for a first attempt, I don't think she did half bad!

Compositions are interesting. Colors are OK but a bit cool. Contrast is high on all but the first one.

But overall, good eye contact, good smiles. Madison loves the camera and the camera loves her.

I had my friend use the setting I usually use in full sun (just Creative Auto tweaked a little, instead of taking the time to go through one of the custom settings, was quicker), thinking she would shoot her in the sunlight as opposed to the shadow of my fence. Next time I will just have her stick it in Portrait mode and have at haha. My bad on the colors!

What an adorable little model. Love the freckles! #1 looks a bit overexposed.

There is a sun flare across the top half of her face, could have something to do with it. She loves having her picture taken!

My favorite is #2. I like the colors and it's a great expression on her!
The others have more of the "shoot-down-itis" where adults often shoot down at small kids instead of getting down to their level. Yes, it's a rule that can be broken...and I do break it myself after I have a handful of shots from kid height and lower.

Darling girl. She can probably hear you switch on your camera from across the yard and she comes running! Those are fun kids to work with.

How are you using Creative Auto? I only ask, because it sounds like you may not know what it does. Both are auto. I assume with Creative Auto, you make the background blurrier. Portrait does the same thing. The only other thing you can change is brightness and I don't think you've messed with that... right? So, blurry background CA will be the same as portrait mode. To my knowledge, only differences in Portrait mode would be continuous drive which may throw her off.

You can change the color settings.... Vivid, Intense, Monochrome, Brighter, Darker, etc. I know what it does It was the easiest setting to show her how to customize.

When you take photos of children, try getting down to their eye level or below.

I will let my friend know

When I take photos of children I generally do get down to their level or lower.
