I got a message that the photo I was trying to attach in the G15 Photos thread was too big, in kb. I cropped it to come under the stated maximum. That worked. However, many photos on the site are much larger than that one. What makes the difference?

You were "attaching" a photo, which means you uploaded it to POTN for hosting, so there's a file size (KB) limit. Many of us host our images elsewhere and "embed" them here, so we don't have the file size restriction that attachments have. We're still supposed to keep them 1024x1024 pixels or smaller, but the forum software doesn't have a way of enforcing that with embeds, so we rely on people reporting those oversized posts. See the Image Posting FAQ linked in my sig. for more.

Thanks. I had read the instructions for posting but didn't realize that the size difference for attached versus embedded was so great. Most photos here are too wide for me to view without scrolling.

Whether embedded or attached the image size is the same 1024 pixels maximum.

What you are running up against is the file size limit of 150 kilobytes for attached images.

Thanks for the help; and of course, Mr Tony Long is involved and he is always helping others

ok, i am trying to post from google+

the goal is to post a slightly larger image; the images posted as attachments through POTN server at too small (well, compared to others)

ok, i was able to insert the image location; but, shouldn't the image just present?

MOD edit:

I've had trouble trying to post photos from my Flickr account since they changed things there some time ago. Here's a try using the BBCode:

Please check the terms of use of your google+ account to see if they allow links from other web pages or forums like POTN.

Technically, in your previous attempt you linked to a page in google plus. You need to provide the image url and enclose it in [img][/img] tags or use the icon to paste the url in your post.

In your previous attempt, the image url (in firefox right click > Copy Image Location) is
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-yu-LxS0GCjM/ULG_6kp8LwI/AAAAAAAAWjg/e0ibJxWGKbw/w625-h379-p-k/los%2Bangeles%2Bsunset%2Bat%2BGP.jpg (note the .jpg at the end of the link)

I edited your post above to include that link and the image is showing now.

That didn't show up, Gary. Flickr has a way of extracting the "BBCode" for posting photos -- did you see/use that?
