I have the pentax 50mm f2 reversed on extension tubes. Before that I was using the nifty fifty and it was fine. This gets me close but I seem to get a haze type effect sometimes like this

Gosh I don't know -- if it were me I'd do a whole series of bracketed MF shots -- it looks to me like you are maybe just not nailing your focus, but without seeing some shots with something definitely in focus, well then I just down know whether there are IQ problems or not!

Wondering if you might be getting some light from the flash directly hitting the lens. Is this setup shorter than with the nifty fifty?

It is shorter and the flash hangs over the lens. I have cut it back today so it is behind to see if that help. The nifty fifty's front element is deep set back so I guess that helps it but with the pentax reversed its on show. I did test it out on a picture of a leaf and I didn't get any haze. I am going to take a picture of my eye again to see if it works.

This is a picture of a tarantula spiderling shed. It is in focus but I get this haze again. I tried with my eyes after I cut it back and it was still there but not as much. It is more prominent on the out of focus area but still there on the in focus areas.

hahaha less that £35 wish it would work though. The nifty fifty on the end of it gets super sharp pictures

Try it without the flash. Flash can do funny things to macro shooting. If the haze goes away without the flash, then you'll want to work on ways of, well, dealing with that, maybe getting the flash off-camera in creative ways.
If it's not the flash, well, hmm...keep testing!

I does keep happening, I think it has something to do with the aperture blade cause reflections when stopped down. It is really bugging me and I don't think I can do anything about it

Those extension tubes don't have any flocking in them and cause the brighter spot in the center of your second image. Add some felt and it'll help. But there's certainly something else going on too, and I'm with everyone else, it seems to be glare from the flash.

I would still start with adding some felt inside the extension tubes. It might all be due to the lack of flocking. Or try it without the tubes at all.
Your two images look a bit different as far as the haze is concerned, but the second one looks exactly like what you get when you have light bouncing around inside the optical pathway. |
