White balance and color settings are not the issue in these shots... just accept that not all lighting conditions will yield equally pleasing photos. Unfortunately when you are touring you don't always get the perfect light for your photos - sometimes, you just take the best shot you can in the given light before you move on.

Lens hoods can help keep things from getting washed out (and prevent flair) and polarizes can get the sky to be a bluer than it is when you just don't have the option of shooting at dawn or sunset.

When I was in Venice the 3 days we were there it rained like 90% of the time. For about 45 minutes of the entire time did I have some pleasing lighting conditions, that was it! Sometimes it just happens that way...

I have a G12 and I shoot everything in the "Vivid Color" mode from the Function Set button. I have been very happy with the results. I can always tone the color down after the fact if necessary, but in all my pics I have not had too.

I had a general feeling that those shots were taken in unfavourable conditions. I,ve just got back from Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, absolute nightmare to get good shots in the very harsh lighting conditions with the Canon G1x. Took some bracketed shots with a polarizer to get the right exposur/contrast conition.
Sometime its better to go back to the scene when light is more favourable, but sometimes the time available is not an option.
Dont know if any users on here is Photographers Ephemeris to plan there shots.
