Thanks, I think you are right. I have seen Great Blue Herons using the same technique.

I actually bought the 70-300 in January, but I haven't been testing it as much as I should have (I'm not a big winter stay-out-in-the-cold-and-take-pictures-with-stiff-and-blue-hands enthusiast).
Now with spring and summer here, I've pulled it out a bit more often, anyways.

I don't really feel that I get the most out of it, and I might need some advice on that later.

But it's a cool lens, and here is one of my better bird pics taken with it:

I could probably achieve a lot better shots with it, but I need to work out how. *sighs*
