Paid cash at Canon aurthorised dealer $3589. Because I travelled abroad claimed $327 GST back.Total outlay $3262 not much more than I paid for my 5D & half what I paid for my 1DmkIII. Also a business expense so cost is somewhat academic.

Not really. I was just quoting what she wrote just above her Avatar.

blasthoni!
I didn't say that cameras have a short life span (even though I thought it was an obvious exaggeration) - I said it about DIGITAL cameras specifically! I still use a 37 year old Olympus OM2 and it has a much larger viewfinder than any viewfinder I've personally ever seen on ANY dSLR (including my own 1DMkII). Maybe the newer 1D cameras have larger and better viewfinders, but not from what I've read - I have two 7D bodies, one 5D body and two 40D bodies and IIRC I have read that the 7D viewfinder is more or less the same as the newer 1D viewfinders (which seems to be less than half the area of the OM2)

the average cell. Although my current Blackberry is 8 years old too.
I upgrade when the new bodies have features that I find interesting,
and performance that I want. Such as the High ISO, 63 point Auto Focus
and the new in camera HDR. You don't need to make money at it,
just need to have fun with it. And even adding in all the lenses and
other accessories, I've still spent less thank some of my friends have
spent on Beer over the last 10 years. I've seen them drop a Grand in
one night on booze. And lets not bring up what they loose in Vegas.
So it's all relative. A new body, a weekend at the craps tables,
a new Jet Ski, a Harley, or whatever you vise.
You quote me, then put words in my mouth

Where did I imply there were any "restrictions"?

If people want to spend $1000 a night on booze, that's their business (and as they say, "life is short" - for them, I'd expect it to be exceptionally short!

My response was based on the implication that the cost of the 5D3 was high for most people. I guess for a camera body it is - for a professional photographer the cost is a non-factor. Virtually any two "L" lenses will cost more than the sum of the price of the 5D3, and any long lens (other than the 400mm f5.6) would alone cost more than the price of the 5D3.

So my point was that for "hobbyists" to whom money is an object, the 5D3 seems like an unnecessary expense. At least if it requires buying on credit.

I worked 40 years in the Nuclear Industry, and got "all the unpaid overtime I wanted, up to 32 hours a week". After 72 hour work weeks for 40 years, I saved my money for the 'important' things in life.
