The only real data we have here is Dave's photo above, and without saying or knowing anything else, it sure looks to me like the subject is in focus while the background is clearly(?) out-of-focus.
When Dave gets back, maybe he'll tell us shooting distance & other stuff, but it would seem that for some casual portrait work, you can fill up most of the frame with your subject's head & maybe shoulders while zoomed in on your subject wide open, and at some distance the background will begin to fade out of focus to some degree with the S95. |

I just received my S95 the other day, and love it so far. I wouldn't depend on the f/2.0 lens, however, if you are trying to get a shallow DOF in non macro mode. Grab your DSLR for that task! For comparison, I took the following shots using my S95 and also a 5D2. Both shots were at f/2.0. The focal lengths were different between the two, but I tried framing the shots so that they were similar.

5 pages and still noone has answered OPs question with any real pictures. Everything posted is still 1-2 feet away.
Can someone with an S95 take a few pictures of objects 4-5 feet away and show us what level of bokeh or background blur or whatever the heck you wanna call it, the camera produces? My S95 is in the post on its way from Amazon otherwise I would have taken and posted 4-5 examples pics within 2 minutes. |

It has been answered many times. The answer is no.
For examples of S95 images have a look on flickr or Photobucket etc. I dont know what you think your going to post but good luck if you think you can do what others cant.

Taken with S95 maximum aperture is 2.0 and the camera is fully zoomed OUT, the ISO 80 and distance to radio is about 1 meter. The books are out of focus.
![]() Taken with S95 maximum aperture is 4.9 and the camera is fully zoomed IN, the ISO goes up to 400 and distance to radio is about 1 meter. Do notice that when you zoom in the maximum aperture is 4.9, and the ISO goes up. The books are out of focus, but no more and no less than the first picture. ![]() So the question is this, is it not just better to zoom out, take the maixum aperture of 2.0, and the the low ISO? This is the first picture just cropped, that means this pictures is taken with S95 maximum aperture is 2.0 and the camera is fully zoomed OUT, the ISO 80 and distance to radio is about 1 meter. The books are out of focus. AND cropped to the same size as if I had maxmim zoomed.
