I personally wouldn't bother with the GoPro strictly for photos. There are tons of better options in small sizes out there.

Yeah, it's really a video camera. If you want bulletproof camera with good stills, I might check out the Olympus Tough TG-1.

My daughter took mine on a zip line trip to take some videos, but instead had it in still mode. Here is one taken from a helmet mount. The videos I've taken from my motorcycle are amazing.

It's a great inexpensive video camera, I'd love to have a couple of those to film car scenes, but alas as cheap as they are they're a bit pricey for me at the moment

yes you can take photos with a GoPro. but it was designed and better suited for video. OP is interested in using a GoPro for photos only. There are tons of cameras that can do a better job with photos than the GoPro. The only advantage i see in using the GoPro is for the wide angle lens.

Ya rly.
That picture is great to you because of its sentimental value. To me, the colours are washed out and flat, and I'd bet those trees were a lot more vibrant in real life. |

You can show me as many photos as you like, with as much pushing of the vibrance and saturation as you want. I have enough experience with gopros to know that the colour reproduction is not accurate at all. I did not make myself quite clear in my previous reply; what I meant by vibrant was not saturation, but rather the colours themselves.
The gopro is great for video, its extremely difficult to beat the size, price, and convenience. But for photos, no thanks. You can buy any recent P&S at $299 or under and it will give you better IQ right off the bat and there's a good reason; the gopro isn't designed for IQ. Its designed for size, durability and ease of use by people who know how to edit. |

I'm not saying it is as good as a dedicated photo camera. I was saying that your point of view "For photos, don't bother" isn't fully correct. You can take really great pics with gopro cameras if you know how to use them and you know their limitations. Also you can use it to take pics that are almost impossible or hard to take with regular cameras (mostly action pics).
Anyway , you should try also the new Hero3. I just tested mine yesterday and it's a pretty big step forward ![]()

Keep in mind that the GoPro also doesn't have a view screen standard so you need to budget for that if you are going that way.
I wonder what the OP went with since this thread is over two months old now...
