Default Gunung Bromo

http://www.flickr.com/photos/djentley/5489081660/

Gunung Bromo, East Java, Indonesia.

That day the ash closed Malang airport to the West before the wind turned Eastwards and the ash caused an evening storm over Wonotoro and Ngadisari where I was staying that night.

You couldn't see five metres infront of yourself and a section of the road down to Sukapura slid off into a ravine. Ash fell as far away as Probbolinggo, a good thirty kilometres from the lookout. All great fun.

I've shot landscapes very rarely, but never a volcano, so feel free to point out my failings. I have hundreds of others but the ash haze kind of limits dynamic range and made the camera overexpose in its modes, anyone know how to correct this in post?

Great image. Not sure about your last question though.

outstating image - if you shot in RAW and your over exposed areas are not clipping then you can simply recover these areas with curves and levels..

Great image, and a great candidate for long exposure (due to the dynamic movement of the ash and possibly fog) and/or night photography (you may be able to pick up flying lava debris near dusk too). Just a thought.

Keep up the good work.

Awesome picture.
Did you try Image/Adjustment/ShadowHighlight in PS?
It has a radius adjustment that can really make contours pop as well as fixing the dynamic range.

A pyroclastic cloud exits Bromo's main crater and thunders down onto where people would usually walk. Before this release the volcano had only been venting a lighter ash that looked more like thick steam. Strange thing is there was no sound. Nothing.

The whole area was hazy with suspended ash which is no surprise considering these columns quickly rose several kilometres into the sky.

I have a whole sequence from this blast.

Absolutely stunning images. The camera might overexpose slightly since darker tones are predominant in the images (they don't average out to mid-grey). In Lightroom you can tweak the exposure setting or, as pointed out previously, use levels and curves in Photoshop. Many thanks for sharing!
