How do I resize an image to meet the challenge criteria? Isn't there a sticky for this somewhere. I shoot my stuff in L which produces HUGE files. Should I not be doing this if I intend to share on the web? Thanks

What image editing software are you using?
IMO you should always shoot full sized images in camera ("L" as you say). Yes, you can set the camera to shoot smaller/cropped images if you think you'll only be posting them to the web - BUT if you happen to get a particularly great shot which you'd later like to make a print of etc. you'll be out of luck. You can never make a small image larger...you can always make a large image smaller. |

Try FastStone photo resizer. It is FREE for non commercial use and does an excellent job. It can resize Folders of photos all at once and can rename and watermark them as well and does NOT alter the original.
www.faststone.org I use it all of the time. Hillbille |

I don't use Lightroom, but with most software I've used there is some sort of .jpg "quality" (compression) setting which, if dialed down a bit, will reduce your file sizes...if you don't get an answer here try the "RAW, Post Processing and Printing" subforum.

In order to not sacrifice image quality simply load your 800 pixel image onto your Flickr account without reducing the image's quality. Save the 800 at it's maximum quality and then load it to Flicker. This is a bit tricky, but here it goes: once loaded in Flickr, use their drop down "Share this" menu provided just above the selected image, then select "Grab the HTML/BCCode". Here starts the trickier part, so as to make a nice clean entry to your challenge posting, without it including that annoying Flickr reference. Once you have the "Grab the HTML/BBCode" open, select the "Original" file size. Then see all that gobledegook code above in that "Copy and paste the code below:" field? You dont, DON'T, need all that code. Simple read down about half way through it and you will read a link in quotes that starts off as ""http://farm1.static.flickr.com/blah..blah..blah.....", with a bunch of numbers ending with a jpg extension. Simply copy the link from http: through to .jpg, leaving the quotes out and you have the URL link that you can then post here. Give it a practice try here if you want. Remember this: the Flickr links you always want to copy make reference to "farm" inside it. You see that farm in the link, you're solid. I do all my postings here in this manner so that I can maintain image quality. I also maintain a Challenge 800 set on Flickr that I use strictly for posting here, because they are downsized images I don't wish to confuse them for future printing and whatnot.
If you were to copy all the code flickr provides, your image would also provide their "brought to you by..." and link. Not needed, frankly. Good luck and look forward to dueling with you.

Thanks! I used that software sometime back, loved it, but lost the software when I reformatted the hard drive. I couldn't remember the name and have been searching for it ever since. I highly recommend this as well for batch processing and watermarking images. This can handle raw as well.

Been using Fastone Resizer. Allows batch mode and watermarks, with different pre-settings to be stored and immediately reused. Handy. Image quality, I defer to the more experienced members.

I agree with Kevan...I go via flickr, it's not as complicated as it sounds ...and for challenges it is so easy to upload and your images are 100% quality not 95%....and correctly sized. Look forward to you joining us in the challenges!

Don't know if this helps...but I use a MacBook and I export my photos from iPhoto...I use "maximum" quality & "custom "sizing ...I adjust the length or width to 800 (depending on the shot) not the overall 800 pixels option. I then import onto Flickr & the process as already described to enter the challenges. Just a thought.
