I'm in the market for a 16-35 II, I see these being posted for anywhere from $1400 to $1600 used in a wide range of conditions as well. Price on Canon's refurbished site right now is $1359, my question is, would you guys rather get a refurbished lens (I never bought one before) or a used lens that might cost a bit more?

Refurb. They've been checked over by Canon to make sure they're in good working condition.

I'm curious, when you order a lens from the Canon refurb store, does it take awhile before they ship it? I ordered one last Wed, got an email the order was in but nothing yet from them indicating they shipped the lens. It's my first time ordering from them, so I'm not sure what to expect.

Refurb!

I bought my refurb 85L during the 10% canon rebate on top of 3% Mr. Rebates and paid less than $1700 for it to my door, tax and shipping included. Although my first one had a defect, Canon replaced it for free which is flawless all around. Very happy with it!

It took a few days for them to ship it, a day or two, but it was not bad.

I highly recommend the canon refurbs!

Used if I can check it out myself first. Otherwise Refurb.

The biggest issue with Refurbs is the chance you will get a "lemon" that has been technically brought back to working condition but which is still a lemon and will fail you very soon. I haven't experienced this with lenses, but with most other electronics this situation is fairly common.

^have never heard that and on the refurb thread every1 was satisfied including me. i would imagine there's more risk buying second hand (no matter what the seller might claim) than buying directly from canon which has warranty and has been checked over. so refurb all the way for me.

I pretty much buy whatever I can find REFURB (only at bhphoto.com), I buy used from them as well if it is graded above 9 and I've never had a slight problem.

Give them a call. Sometimes they flag it and need confirmation to proceed.
