Could it be used professionally?

Slow and inconsistent AF makes it unusable for moving subjects, but the optics are good.

I had one. Sold it and bought a 24-70. I wasn't impressed with the sharpness of the 24-70 so I sold it and bought another 28-75. I use this lens quite a bit for commercial shoots but not too much for weddings as I have other lenses that I like better. Like form said, the AF is slow but I've never had an issue with inconsistent focusing. But the lens is sharp.

I've used it again and again. Autofocus isn't superfast but but this isn't sports or wildlife. Works for me.

I had one for my 20D, but I ditched it for the 17-55, which gave me better focus at the time. The 7D + 17-55 didn't focus as well as my 20D + 28-75 though.
A 28-75 on a crop body is too long, you need a wide lens on another body at the same time, and maybe a 70-200 on another body. Just because of that a 17-55 might be a better choice.

I had this same question as I just purchased this lens for an upcoming wedding. Based on the suggestions of the forum, I rented the 17-55 IS for the ceremony. I'm not sure how wide I will need to go for the reception but if it's not too bad I may switch to the 28-75 as my walk around and first dance lens.

This Tammy, along with Canon's 70-200 2.8 IS L, are The Wife's go-to lenses for weddings. Focus concerns are generally overblown in our experience--we use AF assist with the 580EXII and never miss a shot. The optics are very, very good (the L is better, though). The one real complaint is that it vignettes on a full-frame body, like the 5DII, but since these are wedding shots, The Wife would be adding vignetting anyway in post, so no blood, no foul.
Now, she does plan to get the 24-70L eventually, but the Tammy's such a consistent performer that this upgrade isn't anywhere near a priority.

It's AF isn't particularly fast, and my copy is a little too soft at f2.8 - but none of that should eliminate it from your setup - just be aware of it's limitations, work within them, and you'll be happy. It's a great lens, overall.

I don't generally like any lenses that make noise for big events like that... a dslr can make enough noise on its own when things are quiet, don't need to add to it!
