Default Re: G Series Underwater Images

I can't speak for the older G series but I own a G12 and Canon UW housing and have taken both diving. Firstly I want to say for UW the G12 is not the best, I would choose the s95 if I only wanted a point and shoot for UW.

Secondly Im a strong believer in external strobes for UW. I'm a big fan of the Inon s2000 strobes. Built in flash is ok UW. It is possible to shoot UW with out flash but this requires you to manually sett WB against a reference. I usually take a dive slate with me for this.

I lot of the newer P&S cameras are coming with wider and wider lenses. This is making is harder for people like Inon to make wide angle and macro lenses.

On the conversation of housings, I think Canon make very very good housings. Unless you want to go deeper than 40M (which i dont think many people do, the fish and coral are in the first 12M) then a 4rd party housing is not needed. They are often 3-4 time the price. Having said that I own the Nauticam for my G12 as well for when I find myself at 60M taking pics of wrecks.

The S series has the advantage over the G series for wide angle uw shots. The G series has 2 custom settings which is beneficial compared to the one in the S series.

I tend to disagree - I have the G12 in a Recsea housing with twin YS110 Alpha strobes and think that it is a great camera for underwater photography.

Here are some examples:

Ron,

Thanks for that. I have just ordered a new x3 M67 Macro wet lens from Jeff Mullins and hopefully it will be here soon. He also has a x6 which I am going to try next year when I go to Bali.

Also I am saving up for one of the wide angle ports - possibly the 12mm - also for the same trip.

That's a Western Blue Devil.

Yeah it's a Western Blue Devil fish - when I took that photo I had to use a torch to hightlight it as my strobes had just died - but it didn't turn out to bad.

Karl, how did your strobe die? Didn't fully charge your batteries?

Taken with my G12 with an Inon M67 165mm Close up / Macro wet lens attached to the front of the housing which I had borrowed from a mate to try out. Overall I am happy with the way this one turned out - the crab was about 80mm across.

I have since purchased one of Jeff Mullins Close up /Macro lenses and hope to get to use it very soon.
