If you go to that photo's page and click Edit in the top-right corner and then place your mouse pointer over the photo, the cursor will turn into a cross-hair. If you click and drag, a box will appear with drag handles to resize the box; if you click and drag inside the box, you can reposition it over the part of the photo you want to use as a thumbnail.

Why not display your photos to your best advantage?
Nice! Thanks for the tip!

Suddenly nobody's pics are showing up using firefox, including mine. All the squares are just gray. Is anyone else having this problem?

Just getting started uploading. How many of your are spending the fifty bucks to upgrade?

Edit- It didnt take me long to get a negative 1 on the love meter. lol Not sure how to read it though because I have one favorited and it has a 0.0 score and another that was liked i guess because it has a 27 score.

The "love meter" . Hehe. I like that name. Yes, if you have a 0.0 score on a photo, then somebody hit the dislike button on that one. If someone votes either way on a photo (like or dislike), it will count as a "vote" on the photo. So if the vote goes up and the rating goes down, then someone disliked it. A dislike will also remove a point from the total affection score under your avatar.

Favorites, as far as I can tell, add nothing to your affection or rating. I've noticed that a lot of people will add photos to favorites without voting on them. I often get emails that so-and-so added a photo to favorites, while the votes, rating, and total affection all remain the same as the last time I checked. Maybe people who are unable to vote can still add photos to favorites and make comments. That would explain why I see a lot of activity that comes without any voting.

I wondered about this too. I sent an email to them a while back asking why adding to favorites does not automatically count as a positive vote, I think many people wrongly assume that it does. They replied back agreeing that it should and maybe they will change it in the future.

More to wonder about. Did anyone notice this announcement?...

Hi!

We have changed our voting algorithm effective November 1st 2011, so you will be seeing many changes in rating. Now rating does not now solely rely on likes and dislikes. Once we will be done implementing changes to the system an article will be written on our official blog explaining the new system
Ratings never did rely solely on likes and dislikes; they also decreased over time. So what do you suppose has changed?

Even more mysterious...

Quote:
we've made changes to the algorithm, [your] photos must get a few votes before they will be visible in Fresh
This was a reply to a tweet from @Photogenixlincs on Nov. 1. I don't know how to post a URL of a tweet, if that's even possible.

If photos require votes even to be visible in Fresh, then how can new 500px users get their photos seen? If the photos don't go into Fresh upon being uploaded, then only a user's followers can see them. What if someone has no followers yet?

Edit: Mysteries are fun to try to solve, so I did some poking around on 500px. I watched the Fresh section for a while and noted what happened to some photos that were fewer than 10 minutes old. I spotted numerous photos that got a rating of 59.7 after only one vote. Then I saw several other photos with one vote and a rating of only 27.0 (which is how it always worked before they changed the rating system on Nov. 1). My best guess is that it has something to do with favorites. It looks as though favorites now increase a photo's rating (but don't count as votes).

Wondering if I'm doing something wrong? I created an account yesterday and uploaded 2 photos and between the two of them they've had 1 view and 1 negative vote. Yet any other photo I look a, even ones that have been uploaded a few minutes ago, have a number of views to them. ?? Confused

Don't understand that either. I don't have many views in mine too.. it's a matter of luck i guess.

I've found that the key to getting views and votes is to get a large friend list and comment on other peoples photos
