Default Truck Racing - Pembrey

Ah... truck racing! Nothing quite like it! The smell of tortured tires and the fog of 1,300hp diesels

#1 No, it's not broke... it always smokes like that under power

#2 That's dirt this time... mind the grass old chap!

#3 Look at the lovely Welsh countryside... does that count as a landscape shot?

#4 These guys really do RACE these things....

#5 Shooting through the exhaust fumes can be a problem sometimes

#6 The white smoke at the front is steam off of the brakes (they're water cooled) the black stuff at the back is exhaust and tyres... oh... and a bit of racetrack too!

#7 Look! Another landscape shot...

Don't make the mistake of thinking that these guys are slow... a racing truck is capable of outdragging a Porsche 911 to 100mph and they weigh a minimum of 5,500kg/12,000lbs.

Next stop for the trucks is Brands Hatch where they haven't run for many years because of concerns that they were chewing up the tarmac. Oh, Jonathan Palmer what have you done? To think that last year you were moaning about the rallycross boys getting on the grass

The full gallery from the event is here http://gallery.ukmotorsportpics.com/c729767.html including some paddock shots with the EF 24-105mm f/4L which is rapidly becoming a favourite.

Thanks for looking!

Brilliant shots Glenn, I must try and see some truck racing in the not too distant future but they never seem to come up North I'm trying to think when I last saw a truck race and it must be nearly 20 years ago I feel old now

Cheers
Ian

Picture this ..... You are on the outside of Druids as the pack arrives. Last of the late brakers in on the inside, determined not to brake until the other guy does. They weigh a minimum of 5,500kg/12,000lbs are are doing 60 mph plus.

Question: What ARE you doing standing on the outside of Druids .....

I'm another one who has always been fascinated by this form of racing. Really enjoyed looking at these Glenn, and the ones on your website. I like the sightly wider angled shots as well - be rude not to include a backdrop as good as that!

Cheers,

Simon.

Very nice, particularly #6....thank god we don't have smell-o-vison yet

Just one question. Are they hard to get in focus, being so small and stealthy, must be a nightmare getting the camera to lock on to them

Funny thing is, I was chatting to this nice chap who does the website for the BTRA (British Truck Racing Association) and who was standing beside me with a Nikon D70.

I said "Ah, the nice thing about shooting trucks is that they're so easy to focus on! All that flat frontal area to choose from."

He said "mmm... I have a lot of problems with my shots being out of focus".

At that point I remembered the old "a closed mouth gathers no foot" adage and shut up quickly.

It will be interesting to see whether they allow pros behind the armco at Druids for the truck races and if they do, whether any of them will be brave (foolish?) enough to go there. One thing is fairly certain. That little gravel trap and the tyre wall there won't stop one of these babies.

If you check out the top left of this picture

you will see that the marshals at Pembrey do the sensible thing and retreat up the banking whilst the truck race is running.

I think that says it all Glenn hehehe. I usually suffer from that affliction (footius mouthius) luckily these days I seem to be keeping it at bay.

I won't mention the Noink equipped photographer at en event we were covering video wise, after seeing the soft soft focus and noise even at 100 iso on the photos we were supplied I know how lucky we Canon owners are. I did voice my concerns with my boss about it though and he agreed, for once anyway.

Damn I just mentioned it, wondered why I could taste sole.

I won't even be standing the other side of the armco at druids, that's for sure lol.

The 3 shots of the #70 truck were done with the 10D and Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L. The others were done with the 1D Mark II and Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8EX.

It's actually quite comical to look at these shots. The wacky antics of powerslides in something that big is almost as funny as watching my uncle with two left feet trying to dance.
