Default Modelling flash with 10D & 420EX??

Has anyone fired a modelling flash with the 10D and the 420EX by pressing the DOF button?

The 420EX manual says that a modelling flash can be fired with the D30 and the D60. And the 10D manual makes reference to firing a modelling flash using the 550EX.

Since there is no specific reference to being able to do this with the 420EX attached to the 10D, I'm not sure if it's possible or not. All I know is that when I try it nothing happens when I press the DOF button.

Thanks.

It works with my Sigma EF 500 DG Super. I don't know why it wouldn't work with the 420EX. Are you in the basic or creative modes? It may only work in the creative modes (P, Tv, Av, M, and DEP).

I tried in P, Av and M modes and it didn't work in any of these settings. I'm going to give it one more try after resetting all my custom settings just to make sure it wasn't due to something I set. If it still doesn't work, I'll give Canon a call to determine which unit might be at fault, the 10D or the 420EX.

Thanks.

switch your flash to slave mode, and then push the DOF preview. kinda strange without a master....but it works??

good luck!

All this time, I thought that my 420EX was incapable of firing a modelling flash!

Thanks for proving me wrong!

Yup, it worked, exactly as it said in the manual. Thanks, MURF.

I guess what threw me off was that at the bottom of page 30 (for modeling flash), it says "For depth-of-field preview with the camera, first set the 420EX's wireless select to , then press the depth-of-field preview button." And that's exactly what I did, which obviously doesn't work.
