Default live view tethered to a mac or ipad

Hi I am new to this ...but am looking for a camera that I can link to my mac or pc and see the image before I take it...I have a 400d at the moment .
I phoned Canon yesterday...the tech guy said it was possible to do that with any canon but you needed third party software...he would not tell me what software!! must admit I was not impressed by their attitude...so any help gratefully appreciated

Canon EOS Utilities, which came with the camera. Nada on the iPad though.

I think that only the cameras with live-view can show the image before you take the shot..

Almost all of them can be tethered to a mac or pc using the EOS utilities remote shooting mode.

Agreed. As stated above, the software that comes with the camera will do what you want. You can change the camera's settings, autofocus, etc from the computer interface. It's pretty snazzy.
