Default Need help buying a printer

Let me preface this by saying that I have been unhappy with my cheap Canon wireless multipurpose printer. This is due to the fact that they haven't had any color profiles that work with Apple's Aperture since I've owned it (color rendition is HORRENDOUS). I'm pretty sure I want to try Epson unless I can be convinced otherwise by someone who uses Aperture.

My budget is around <$800 and it would be great if it were wireless. I don't mind buying a separate scanner and am wondering if high end photo printers are capable of printing documents as well. If not I guess I'd like to get a good photo printer and a different one for scanning/ printing documents. The ability to print larger than 8x11 would be a plus as well as the ability to deliver nice matte prints.

We have the Canon 9500II and love it . We can print from 13x19 down to 8x11 and smaller. Lucia is great ink. look for the printer on sale and save $200 or more.

As for printer connections, I use good old Cat 6 1GB ethernet. Much faster and less error prone that any wireless connection. Depending on the broadband hub you have, you can connect the printer to the hub via an empty ethernet port.

Do you use Aperture for post processing??

edit: Looks like I'll keep my multipurpose for docs and scanning and pick up a dedicated photo printer. How is the 9500II on ink usage?

I have also been wondering about ink usage on the 9000 and 9500. Has anyone worked out a $/square inch value or anything like that?

Go to Red River paper web site, they have "cost of printing" tables for the popular printers, also an excellent supplier of papers and ink. I have always used Epson printers with excellent results, wireless is the slowest way to print, USB is faster and more reliable, ethernet better yet. You will be surprised at the difference in costs, I recently upgraded to an Epson 3880 for the larger tanks, ink is cheaper, bought a refurbed 3880 for under a thousand. Before you buy any printer, make sure you are going to print enough to make it practical. Ther is a lot of satisfaction in printing yourself.
