Hi Guys "n" Gals
Been searching but cannot find the answer - but I am probably looking in the wrong place Just ordered a 580 so before I arrives I thought I had better look into how to use it Is there a way to get high speed sync with a 20D - I know I can up the flash sync to 1/250, but what I am after is to have a shutter speed of say 1/1000 and get a flash to fill some of the shadows any pointers welcome Shortie |

Hi Shortie,
There should be a high speed sync button on the flash (at least there is one on my 420EX). The 20D will adapt itself automatically and will allow you to set shutter speeds faster than 1/250. PeteR.

Yes, I can do it with my 550EX, so I'm sure it'll be possible on your 580EX. As somebody else has said, the control will be on your flash and not your camera
With your 20D, you'll be able to sync all the way up to 8000th sec., although the guide number becomes lower as the shutter speed increases. Last edited by Snapman : 25th of October 2005 (Tue) at 09:08. |

thanks all
that would make sense as I could not find any thing in the 20D manual off to find a 580ex manual to down load does this also mean I can use the flash in continous mode but just a lower guide number thanks again Shortie Last edited by shortie : 25th of October 2005 (Tue) at 09:14. |

If by "use the flash in continuous mode but just a lower guide number" you mean use it manually with lower output, HSS and manual don't work the same way. You will be able to select power levels on the 580 for manual flash use; you won't be able to set the 580 for E-TTL II at a lower output. The manual includes constraints on continuous flash use at different power level settings.

BTW Shortie, There was a thread a couple of weeks' ago regarding HSS which taught me something and might interest you. That is, you can leave HSS switched on all the time because it automatically switches off when you use a shutter speed - in the case of a 20D - of 250th or lower.
