Default Any Ice Hockey shots?

Im going to a game in november and im thinking of bringing my xt with the sigma 70-300 lens i have. I found it to be a lil short at the phillies/mets game i went to in september. I was in the 300's then and this hockey game im going to im in the low 200's. Hockey arena's are usually alot smaller then baseball stadiums so im hoping that i'll get some decent shots.

Anyone have any shots from ice hockey games? What kind of settings did you use?

I posted a couple of pics not too long ago on here from the rink and I was way back. I shot with my 70-200mm at 2.8...the lighting in most rinks will give you a yellowish tinge so it is practically a must to shoot RAW to ensure you can correct afterwards...

The reality is Hockey is a QUICK game so the best times to get a shot are on the Power Play because the speed, once the offensive team gains control of the Zone slows done as they try to set up the perfect shot...

I am by no means an expert but I hope this helps...Hope this helps...

Just saturday I Tried to shoot some hockey. Kit lens didnt work out too well(f/5.6 @ 55mm), and I had to shoot through the glass. Fastest shutter speed I could get was 1/100 @ ISO 1600.
Sadly, I did NOT shoot in raw, so I havent corrected this image yet.

Here are a couple that I shot this weekend in Wisconsin at the Pettit Center. Our team traveled up for a 4 game series.

All of these were shot with a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 from the sin bin. Settings were Manual with f2.8 and 800 ISO with the Tv from 1/320 and up. All with a custom white balance. Take a look and let me know if these help out.

the fastest i think my sigma goes is f3.6 so i dont know if that will be good. Maybe i'll stop by the rink i used to work for to get some test shots.

You need to use the cameras white balance when you shoot indoors. Try using manual balance and take a pic of the ice to white balance on. Also your equipment is not sufficient, you need a faster telephoto lens to shoot hockey seriously. The 70-200 2.8 alternatives is popular, Sigma or Canon. But in a good arena you could get OK pics with that lens if you stay below the point where the aperture jumps up to 5 or higher.
Loads of my hockeypics are at www.sorkin.se/aik/05-06 and in cronological order. I'm in the learning process so the last ones are the best.

here are some of mine...

Second all that Alan & BugEyes have said. -- custom white balance, manual exposure, shoot from penalty box. I'll add --- wear a helmet.

the lighting in my local venues are terrible. if you look at my pics you'll see that my exposures usually run 1/320 to 1/400 at ISO 1600 f2.8. I recently shot with a 135 f2, see >>> here <<<

By the sounds of things he is going to a pro game in november...don't think he'll get in the penalty box and given the high glass in there, it wouldn't hlep much anyway...

Cheers,

Not easy, the lighting is awful. I am just a beginner as well, but for the goalie, i have used priority av, iso 1600 1/250 speed, for the hit, i have used the auto sports mode with success for once! I have a 70-200 f2.8 is and a 20d
