Canon DSLR Speed Challenge #209

Out Of Focus

Out Of Focus is the topic. That's right, Out Of Focus. I'm looking for artistic O.O.F. pictures. Sharpness is not always the answer to a composition. So get moody and go O.O.F. for this competition. Subject matter and interpretation is up to you and your creativity.

This challenge begins when posted, and will end at 6:00 p.m. Pacific time Friday, 23 September 2011. Winner of this challenge will be announced shortly thereafter.

Standard Rules apply:
Photo Submissions:

1. Camera - Any Canon DSLR Camera
2. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
3. Size - Please visit Image Posting Rules.
4. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
5. Posting - * ONE PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.* Photo Name in the message subject line.* Camera model & lens used.* Notes -- post brief EXIF data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used.
6. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
7. Have questions, PM me.
8. Have FUN!

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:

* New Topic - After winner is declared.
* Posting Starts - Right after topic is announced.
* Posting Ends - 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time Friday, 23 May 2011.
* Winner from this competition decides the theme of the next one (and judges it for a winner) after this competition is closed.

Thank you all for all of your fabulous submissions, and I'm glad you all tread "outside-the-box" photographically to participate...give yourselves a big pat on the back!

First, some words and then the winner announcement:

kbColorado:
I dig this, not much more I can say about it. Except a personal nit-pick; not fond of the border.

Mo: Nice framing and motion blur. Good colors and lots of fun in the picture.

vasbyt: Mesmerizing. Cold. Alienation. Things I really like. However, the diagonal distraction on the right side of the frame is distracting.

Allen: Almost paint-like with your 1 second shutter, and this forgives the blown areas. But oddly i find myself more captivated by the foreground and background trees with it's Dof than I am with the subjects. Still, your exploring and that's what matters.

Garry: Very nice effort, Garry. Flowing wisps of lines and gentle curves. I'd like to see this image with +1 notch of DPP Contrast and a +1 Saturation.

rawshorty: Nice pan/motion blur capture. looks like she's having a ball. A nice memory.

John: Abstracty slow shutter motion with bold bright colored wisps riding upon a sea of blue-green. Nice blending. I see a hydrofoil speedboat racing to the left.

aponi06: Cute. Looks like me when I have a day off. Nitpick; not enough of the happy baby, but too much surrounding distractions (light, thermostat, chair with jacket) since these distractions are more in focus.

teekay: Nice representation on the theme, clever shooting.

Kevan: Oof feature over-load! Again, clever attempt. Oddly, I find the spider and it's web mildly distracting. Perhaps a closer composition to bring the spider and it's web closer to the viewer, and to balance out the frame.

Geno: Geno, I love almost everything about your picture. It's mood and feel are great. Not to fond about the in-focus hazard buoy and sitting person at the end of the pier. Oddity alert; not sure about the halos around the subjects heads. Are they an OOF feature or a byproduct of post?

Jon: She sure is a cutie, Jon. Nice all around capture and lovely post.

Honorable Mention: Geno--Had you moved 6" (20 cm) to your right during composition, you'd be the winner. Still, lovely capture.

Runner-Up: kbColorado
--I like this a lot; cheerful but at a distance of isolation.

Winner: John B
--I like the artsy, abstracty, surrealist feel to it. Impressionistic. However, I want to see a bigger file (the attached file is too small for my eyes) and the watermark is quite aggressive.

Once again, thank you all for all your great submissions and do not forget to patronize John's next challenge!

Take it away John!
