Seems to be not that much grey, and very blown highlights. And there appears to be some viginetting at the upper corners of #1

Hellashot: all of which i did on purpose, lol.

i didn't want them to be bland and washed out grey, i'm not a fan of the flat black and white look.

the first one i upped the levels until i could juuust make out the clouds, then took out the saturation, then played with the contrast a fair bit, then used highlights and shadows to get a tiny bit of detail out of the bottom of the photo, theen added a really slight sepia, and the viginette, only because without it, you really have a hard time figuring out what you're meant to be looking at. (which, is nothing really. haha)

the second, i did the high contrast and blown hightlights on purpose too

The lower one is the more interesting composition. Did you go for the very harsh contrast deliberately? The highlights are blown out too much.

Ok. I just don't like the subject of the first one for whatever reason. The second is more interesting, but the high contrast effect doesn't seem to suit it. There's just too much expanse of solid black and white. Sorry! Good experiments though

I like the second one best and am a fan of high contrast in B & W. As a matter of interest where in the world were these shots taken?

I like the harsh contrast on them, makes them look grungier.

Initially, they look raw. However, I feel that a successful picture grabs your attention for a little while longer, while you look at the detail. I find the lack of detail means I leave the picture feeling unsatisfied.

Does that make sense?

2nd has the power of an old Roman movie - could be the poster for it. The lack of detail and unsophistocated contrast blending (not) shouts 1930's - suggesting a simpler time for to me.

I like the first one mainly because of old memories at gramma's place where a track ran right behind the back yard, and a passing train always made me feel safe. Like an old smell of home playing on some deep recess of my mind. (and no, I'm not smoking any funny stuff)

The first one doesn't do much for me compared to the second.

The second one has an interesting composition and while I like highlights to be slightly blown as well in this type of shot, I think it was taken a bit too far and a tad less contrast (while still having lots of it mind you) would better suit the shot.

Still, alot of potential here
