Default Depth of field

Hello everyone,

I am a new member here and i have a question about Depth of Field. I want to start recording tech videos and i currently own a Panasonic HDC-TM15 but i have no idea how to change the settings so that it can have depth of field (or even know if it is an option at all ) Now i know this forum is called Canon digital photography but maybe someone can help me with this although its not canon. Now another thing is if its not available on my panasonic which canon camcorder would you recommend with good depth of field (but affordable). Thanks in advance.

That is a consumer camcorder, which means its basically a point and shoot camera size sensor. DOF you want is affected by sensor size along with other things such as Ap, FL, distance, etc.
With that small of a sensor it will be a challenge to get the creative DOF you're looking for. Possible in some situations, but not as easy as a DSLR will do it (the big sensors in DSLRs are one of the many advantages they have for such).
The relatively low price of DSLRs is why they're such a great option for video.

BrickR is right, maybe take a look at one of the Rebel series DSLRs. The T1i, T2i or T3i are reasonably priced options and when bought as a "kit" they come with a basic, all around lens that will get you started into a whole new world of creativity. Both in stills and video.

And if you want to spend more, take a look at the 60D. It has several very nice features that are very video friendly and helpful. Then comes the 7D and 5D cameras. But then you start to spend a whole lot more for those rigs.

Good luck!

Thank you both! that really helped. The Canon Rebel series are nice and very affordable so i might go with one of those.
