Slow down you're all over the place.
First off are you going to get the mount fixed?
I strongly suggest you do.
Do you have any stands?

After you get the mount fixed you can experiment with umbrellas, and modifiers of any sort.

That being said it looks like you just have the strobe lying on the desk pointed at the subject.
Try pointing it away from the subject and on to a white wall, or a white piece of cardboard, sheet etc… and let the light bounce off the card/sheet and hit your subject.

A meter is a good thing to have, but you have to know how to use it.
That is exactly how it was placed I was trying the strobist.com directions to understand light better, but i kinda jumped the flashgun xD
I think this one came out a tad bit better though!

Did you buy yours from the same comapany I bought mine from? If so, I hope my strobe is ok! It sounds ok, looks ok, and flashes, so, so far, I think I'm okay

They seem like very helpful folks, I hope all goes well! Thanks for your time, and useful information! I am currently working on getting a few usable accessories, but the lack of an umbrella stand seems more limiting than I expected! I'm thinking of using a couple of clamps in order to strap it to an umbrella stand~ Would you have any suggestions? Also, what would you get first, a beauty dish, Rotalux® Indirect 150 cm, or? I plan to do whatever photography I am able to, portrait any lenght, stills, and pet's xD
I am thinging of the beauty dish, as I do have some white shoot through generic umbrellae(s), so I figure the BD is a smarter choice, however, the Rotalux looks cool xD

Thank you very much, for the kind words, and the ability to take my poor photography skills
I am still practicing more, and putting theory on hold, until, I'm stuck, and by the looks of it, it's back to class I go!

I would get the stand mount for the strobe first and use umbrellas until you another modifier.

It uses the smaller shaft. So if the umbrella does not fit, do not force it.

Check out the B&H site. It is most excellent, plus it's a great place to buy from, along with Adorama. I happen to like the B&H website better.

Go with the 7mm shaft to fit the orifice in the head of the light. Be aware that the Westcott 7mm shafts will not fit the head orafice (unless somethings change in the last few months).

Also look at a Photec Softlighter, excellent, inexpensive and versatile modifier. Available with 7mm shaft.

Just my .02 worth

You need to get the mount fixed. this is the part you are missing before you go any further. Call Elinchrom or the local Flash repair shop.

Also you've got some funky color balance going on there. Are you shooting raw?
