24-70 to me doesn't seem like a lot of range on a full frame camera, and I wanted something faster than f4. And since I cannot have my 17-55 2.8 IS I settled on this as my first L glass

Yea I got the 24-105 with my 5D as a kit and hardly ever used - f4 just does nothing for me in terms of creativity and I've never been a fan of zooms anyway. Generally feel it makes me lazy when it comes to composition.

IMO primes really shine on FF, 35L in particular because of the massive fov and shallow dof - 35/50/85 is my go-to combo of lenses now.
