Thanks for the comments.

Nekrosoft13: I wasn't too worried about crime, most of the areas I was in were fairly touristy although I was warned a couple of times in panama city that I was about to stray into the ghetto areas. I did make sure I had an old looking camera backpack with no logos and I put bits of duct tape on my camera to make it look beaten up, other than that I just tried to keep my camera out of sight, didn't change lenses in public too much, kept out of obviously bad neighborhoods, backed up every time I could and made sure my gear was covered by insurance.
