Some sample pics...here's a pic I took to try to get the absolute WORST out of the camera....ISO 6400, 24mm, f2.0, 1/30s handheld, focus on the clock...pretty much the perfect combination for seeing the worst of the worst with this camera...no PP...it impressed the hell out of me:

Nice shots lowriderS10!

It seems the new Digic5 noise reduction in .jpg mode is really good. I will be dong some comparisons with the 550/D and I don't know if I'm going to like the results, if you know what I mean

We shall see.

One of the major advantages of the CMOS sensor is its fast processing speed, which allows stuff such as accurate HDR.

The iPhone can do it very well even on its tiny CMOS sensor and relatively small circuit board. It blurs fast moving subjects, but there is no blur or other artifacts due to camera shaking, and the camera doesn't even have IS. You don't even remotely need a tripod.
Yeah the HDR mode on camera is utterly useless, even with a tripod. You would think if the Iphone can do a pretty decent job, Canon should be able to at least match it. Personally I found HDR mode not usable as I was getting doubled images even with a tripod and was getting only proper processing of bright areas in patches which looked horrible. Best is to set the camera on AV and bracket the pictures, then use CS5 or Photomatrix to process the image.

Thanks Yeah, I left the NR on the factory default "normal" mode after seeing some samples online, I think it's a happy medium between noise and detail.

And I know exactly how you mean...after a few hours with it, I began questioning the wisdom of lugging my 1D3/16-35LII to Europe...made me really think haha. I'm going to take the DSLR to Europe, but the fact that I have to question it says a lot about the capabilities of the S100

I can't get over how fast this camera is, the shutter lag from not prefocused to a shot when pressing the shutter button all the way down from the preview is crazy fast, I'd say under .25 seconds.

It's not going to be a replacement for the 1Dmk3 or even the lowly 550D DSLR, but if you need to pack light, it's appears to be a decent substitute for such a small package. I can't bring my camera bag everywhere I go, and frankly wouldn't want to, but if the wife isn't using the S100, then I'm definitely going to grab it for clean-up.

Absolutely...my other concern is theft...a 1D3/16-35L II is much more of a target than a little Canon that looks like it's worth $150 brand new...I don't mind lugging the big camera across the world, but I'm worried about theft in Eastern Europe, so I'm having a really hard time deciding right now haha

And this is why I have a zero deductible personal items policy just on my camera gear. Covers theft, loss, and accidental damage.

From the post below........ Send me a P.M. of where you are staying in Eastern Europe, so I can "borrow" the 1D3 mated to the 16-35L. Promise to give it back right away.........

Actually that's a good idea, it's just a bit more expensive up front from a monthly pament perspective.

Took this one to Lightroom for a b&w conversion and PP. Haven't owned a p&s in a while - pretty pleased so far with this S100.

It's amazing what this camera can do, but modern DSLRs even my 30D are still better at high ISOs. The S100 does a great job at handling the noise, but when you zoom in 100% the larger camera clearly has more detail. It's starting to get close at IS0800/1600 though! Amazed I can shoot at ISO6400 and it looks better than ISO800 did on my SD700IS!
