I would say that it is human nature to automatically believe that whatever you buy is the best. A 20Der may say that they got more capabilities, a 350Der (Rebel XT) may say that they got comperable capabilities, but saved money. Either way, the "Proof is in the pudding." I try to look more at what their pictures are like and /or comments they make, rather than equipment they own.
So, is there a social divide? I would say that it exists only between those who do not feel adequate about their own skills. Of course that is the psychology major side of me talking. It's just like any other activity.

We've all seen people get some amazing shots with a P&S, and seen some people get ungodly horrible shots with a 1DsMkII(hard to believe). Equipment isn't important. There's someone who can make anything work.

yep. its not your equiptment (although it can help a bit) its all about the photographer and his eye and creativity and using what hes got. if i was super talented it wont matter if i use a P&S vs a 1dmkII.
i really notice no divide and i agree with Loki1117, people with no skills will rely on their equiptment, more expensive for these type of people the better, to bolster their image (for lack of better words).

You're probably right but I can't help feeling that people look upon my 350D as being an amateur device.
And yes, it does make me wonder whether I bought the "right camera". |

I tried the 350D but it was w-a-y too small in my hands. Previous comments about what you do, and not what you do it with are quite right.

I get the same feeling. Some 20D owners want to put the 350D in the same class as the 300D. But in reality the 350D and 20D are very similar in their capabilities, and both of them a huge step above the 300D. I don't doubt that the 20D is a better camera, but I doubt very much that it's a better value. And if I ever hope to get some good lenses, I'm going to need to save money where ever I can.

its just a tool - I know photographers that get great pictures consistantly out of there compacts, they just know the limitations of the tool and dont try to exceed it.
the 350D has a huge range of scope to take pictures with the correct lenses. If you look at the comparison between 20d and 350d and then ask how often I would need that for the pictures i want to take. When I went digital I delibratly went for a compact canon PRO1 as I did not want to carry all the lenses etc around as i used to with the Film EOS System I had. I again I understood what those limitations would mean. so out take lots of photos and enjoy........ This picture went to print from a 300D http://www.dpforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2724 I'm sure there are lots on this website to

Well that's another thing that rubs the fur the wrong way when people say the 300 does not hold a candle to the later models.
From what I have seen the 300 is more robust than the 350 and as for performance, unless the pictures are printed beyond A4 the difference is negligible. |

Nothing better than showing up to a football game with the ol' 300D. It get's me some wonderful looks from "experts and critics", but takes nice pictures. It's done me proud, and those "experts and critics" that judge my photography without actually seeing a picture can go jump in a lake.
And for a few of them, I've seen their pictures, and me and my 300D have nothing to fear. In other words I agree with; etaf, kaitanium, and Ronald S. Jr., it's just a tool, or a means to an end. The camera isn't going to take the pictures for you, it still needs an operator, and the better the operator the better the picture. All the models mentioned are capable of some stunning pictures in the right hands.

I always want a new camera. The thing that stops me buying one is the question "will my photos really look better with my new toy?". The honest answer is invariably no
Unfortunately that sort of logic doesn't prevent me from spending lots on lenses
