I can't offer any better location suggestions than what's been offered up here. I need to get back and explore some more.
A couple of thoughts tho, seriously consider Laurent Martre's books "Photographing the Southwest" Volumes 1-3. Great info to study up on and we hit a few spots we may have otherwise driven by without noticing. Another thought, to get in the spirit (since you have a bit of time), I enjoyed reading some of Tony Hillerman's work (Mysteries set in the 4 corners area). While not as good as the books themselves, PBS made 3 of the books into movies that were pretty good as well. |

I second all suggestions that include Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon (North and South Rims), Arches National Park, and particularly Monument Valley (my favorite spot in the world). The rest of the suggestions are all excellent but that country is spread out and it takes a while to get from one place to the other and you won't get to all of it on one trip, so just in case, the five I have mentioned by name here are absolutely must-sees for me.
