Had a studio shoot, 1 model 3 outfits. We cant sit at my computer because she lives too far so I need to send her these photos online. Of course I know what the best ones are but I want her to have a say in it it too.
I've resized my full sized RAW files to 800x1200 jpegs and forced the filesize under 200kb for each photo to make it easy to upload (client knows this). But whats the best program or service to use for showing clients these photos so she can tell me which ones are keepers? Thanks. |

I'd put them on CD/DVD. Make a Best folder, & a folder for each outfit. Then use JAlbum to make a gallery for her to choose from.

Smugmug?
How did you end up with 600 images from only one model and three outfits though?

We shot about 600 snaps because she's a new model, and her poses were not only untrained but improv. Each outfit was about 200 shots, of those shots consisted of full body, knee up, waist up and headshot...
How am I supposed to have done this with less shots? Of those 600 we'll pick about 3 from each outfit but I dont get how 600 is a lot if youre snapping away while the model poses? Last edited by thedcmule2 : 4th of February 2012 (Sat) at 22:49. |

Cut them down to the top 10 or top 15 per outfit, then let her narrow down from there.
If she's new, chances are she doesn't know what's good and what's not.

I hesitate to suggest this, but - look at Microsoft's Skydrive. They downsize jpegs at upload to about 500kb, but when downloaded to her computer she should be able to have enough quality to make her choices. (and you've already got yours downsized)
It's free, it's not uber-fast, but it allows easy folders, and does bulk loading (although I've never uploaded more than about 100 at a time). Once uploaded, all you have to do is email her the url address assigned and she can browse/download. The only thing I use Skydrive for is to share with family/friends/coaches - if their downloaded quality isn't good enough I send them a cheap ($7.00) usb key and they eventually get it back to me.

I would never send a model 600 pics. Actually, I would never take 600 pics of one model in one day but I learnt my craft using film so I feel bad if I take more than 100 in a day (that would cost a small fortune in film and processing costs). Most of my one day shoots result in about 100-150 images.
I agree with the suggestion to narrow it down. I usually go for 3-6 images for each look and a total of 30-50 is typical for a one day shoot. If you use Photoshop with Adobe Bridge you can select the best ones in Bridge and use the Output window to create a PDF. This is a great way of sending images for review because 1. The ID number of the image is printed below the picture 2. The file is quite small so suitable for emailing 3. You can zoom in to a decent size to evaluate the image 4. It is difficult to extract the images (some models like to use the unedited images for their online portfolios - I hate that) 5. If you want you can add a watermatk to the images.

This is why I suggested a "Best" folder. Help her out a little?

There are many reasons not to give a client the choice of too many images but these 2 drive me:
I'm paid / selected for my ability, that's not my ability to point a camera, but my artistic vision, Ive studied photography and I know the difference between a strong shot , a weak shot and utter rubbish. When giving clients/customers proofs, if they're overwhelmed they start editing out, so they're now looking at my work looking for faults, rather than just being pleased with the pictures, you're asking her to find fault with 95% of your images. You're free to take up the advice of people who've told you how to do this, but when the model comes back to you either confused or unhappy, remember those of us who's experience you could have learnt a real lesson from. |

It's OK that you took 600 images because its digital. But going along the lings of others here I would end up sorting through about top 50-60 images from that bunch and expect to actually deliver about 3 images per outfit which are really good.

You're not doing it wrong, as there really is no wrong way to go about it. It just sounds like overshooting to me. Then again I pose people instead of letting them do whatever they want.

I upload them to SmugMug. Then select all the images for download in Smugmug (very same ones I uploaded) SmugMug emails me a link to a zip file to download them and I forward that link to the client.
