Nikon 24-70 is $1890 MSRP. The II better be amazing for $2300 with no IS...

I looked at the MTF charts for the primes, the 24 doesn't seem too impressive, better stopped down but pretty much the same wide-open as the old one.

I guess for a moment i will reverse my original opinion on the 28/24mm primes...Just for a moment...To argue a possible use for them...

I do take a lot of food shots in restaurants and stuff, the 24 or 28mm prime would probubly work pretty well for such things...

Using wide apertures is problematic due to depth of field and being close to the subject, IS is obviously helpful, even with wide focal length lenses like this... They're small and compact, which also translates to being fairly discrete, and the AF performance should be very good in low light....Theoretically the bokeh should be improved due to using a 7-bladed circular aperture versus the non-circular aperture on the 28mm f/1.8

Still really overpriced, But I do admit if they WERENT $800 i might actually consider replacing my 28mm f/1.8 with the 28mm f/2.8 IS for those things....

Soemthing else that you didn't mention, but I think are very painfully aware of: light in restaurants is typically quite... romantic.

Not at all suitable for pics of food before you dig in. These lenses seem ideal for that situation.

I might be trying a g1x instead though.

Indeed, I usually love using the ambient in a restaurant.... Shame its usually quite dim...

But thats also why i do like my wider apertures in those situations...
