This is just silly..
82mm filter size, no IS, and a huge jump in price.. If you have a sharp 24-70, you know the thing is ridiculous, especially stopped down a bit.. Unless the 5DIII is 40MP or something and the 24-70 II is the only lens that resolves to it, I just don't understand this. |

I would have imagined at nearly double the price, the 24-70mm II would have had IS. crazy.

The 24 is interesting just because of its size, USM etc. if the price gets down to about $550 I would be interested.

I really never thought I'd see the day that Nikon's overpriced lenses were as affordable or more than Canon's.

The new 24-70L needs to be a lot better to make me change, I love mine, apart from the weight, it's seriously good. I wonder though if the new one resolves more resolution that will become more apparent with much higher MP sensors? I also expect prices will slowly become more sane but I won't bank on it.

I guess it's not wise to assume anything, but the mkll 24-70 should be a noticeable improvement in image quality, especially on the newer, higher mega-pixel cameras.
The 70-200 mkll was a nice improvement over the mkl. The 24-70 mkll will be worthy of the price increase for many here at POTN. I would have preferred the mkll to have IS, but a 24-70 IS lens for around $2900 would exclude many people from purchasing I suppose. If you use a 5dll or plan to use a 5dlll, the new 24-70 mkll should give stellar results, imo.

Its possible Canon ran into problems integrating a IS system into the new 24-70. The new IS primes can't be that hard to desgin and manufacture, I consider them to be a easier challenge.

Canon Rumors reported that 2 versions of the 24-70 were out for testing a few months ago. One with IS and one without. It was suggested that the IS addition made a big enough difference in weight that it was a real negative factor.

Oh my...
[rant] Nikon releases: D800 - DROOOOOOOOOOOOL Canon releases: 3 weird & overprised lenses - AGAIN So disappointment once again. Actually there hasnt been any interesting (to me) announcement in last two years from Canon! In lenses Canon pleases only few people: cine stuff for hollywood, 10k€ stuff for birding, fisheye zoom that 0,1% love, idiotic 70-300m L, super-pricey 24-70mm, weird & overpriced wide primes. Well 70-200mm a was big hit but not my kind of a lens. Actually last interesting release (to me) was in 2009: 100L macro. At same time Sigma (/Tamron) has made tons of great lenses! 8-16mm, 10-20mm 3.5, 150mm OS macro, 120-300mm OS (@ <2K€!!), 85mm 1.4, (70-300mm VC, 24-70mm VC).. off the top of my head. And lets not forget Samyang! Of course Sigmas (ect) work in canon so how about the bodies in last 2 years.. Canon?: 60D - stupid update with more plastic & idiotic MFA drop. Also great 1Dx that no-one cant afford. Of course mandatory 1100D and maybe one xxxD that I couldnt care less. At same time Nikon has made two great bodies (D7000, D800) and Pentax has also released interesting K-5 that IMO tops Canon 7D. To me Lenses: Sigma >>> Canon (Canon has totally lost it.) Bodies: Nikon > Canon (Sony sensor rocks.) So there is no reason anymore... I wait till May (7D/5D) and then it's Canon ---> Nikon. ..and if you got Canon inc. stocks: Sell them. I predict very hard times for this company with these idiotic releases. Phew, that helped. Sry about the rant & my bad english. (...and I also vote for PhotographyOfTheNikon) [/rant] |
