I just read somewhere about this.. Now this would definitely interest me.. I had the old 200mm prime but sold it because I wasn't always getting the sharpest images. User error of course. But this along with the is and the macro. I know I could definitely get some use.

Hmmmmm........ Maybe a replacement for the aging 180mm Macro. If they make one, and it's every bit as sharp as the 100mm Macro with the Hybrid IS it could be worth a look.

Given the technological advancements, 200mm at f/2.8 will be razor sharp corner to corner with amazing contrast and optical performance. There should be no excuses. The longer the focal length, the less light has to bend. It is technically easier to achieve optical perfection.
The 200m f/2.8L II is a decent performer, but pales in comparison to the 700-200mm f/2.8L IS II at 200mm. If a 200mm f/2.8 IS comes out, expect it to be better optically than the 100L. This lens would make perfect sense to replace both the aging 180L Macro and the 200 f/2.8L.

i was going to get the 70-200 f2.8L mainly for portraits and just having the versatility of a zoom. But if this were to come out, itd be lovely for portraits and i shoot a lot of food too, i imagine the depth of field would be just as nice.

Only if they can somehow make it focus as fast as the 200 2.8 when it's not in macro mode. The problem with macro lenses is the long focus throw, which ends up resulting in slower focusing, even when a limiter is used.
